Geographical and cultural differences in responses to daylight

DLA Annual Conference 2019
Workshop 1

Friday 15 November 2019
from 11:15 to 12:30 and
from 14:00 to 15:00

Lead
Dr. Martine Knoop, Technische Universität Berlin, Germany

Description
Most research studies looking into the subjective responses to daylight (daylight preference, room and object appearance, comfort aspects) are related to temperate climates. One of the suggestions for research concluding the DLA paper “Daylight: What makes the difference?” 1 argues that “prevalence of weather conditions and architectural archetypes might influence occupants’ expectations and responses, thus the impact of climate and culture on light source preference, room and object appearance as well as comfort aspects should be the subject of further investigation”.

In this workshop, participants will be invited to discuss the influence the geographical or cultural context can have on our relationship to daylight.

Objectives of the workshop

  • Collect ideas and thoughts on this topic from different fields/perspectives
  • Discuss approach to investigate geographical and cultural differences in responses towards daylight
  • Initiate a working group
  • Define possible directions/goals for a project
